Talk Summary

Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

None of us are that lucky where we either have a choice of work or that we choose our work and are always happy. Although I agree with the sentiments of Confucius it is perhaps unrealistic for most of us. Maybe that’s because we look at work and we operate a dualistic approach. Work is what I have to do and then the rest is leisure; my own time. Or perhaps in the words of Thomas Edison, the famous American inventor "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” We often view our world as either , “secular” or “sacred”; the work stuff of life and the God bit. This then affects our attitude because if we see our world as sacred, God who made all things, then our work, home, leisure is all sacred. Our approach to work then takes on a whole new meaning, when I go to engage in “work” either as self-employed or or for an employer I am working for God. Now I am sure that your employer would be surprised if you call him, “God”!! However your mindset in working for an employer or as an employer with an employee takes on a new meaning, I want my life to be meaningful and work with my whole heart to serve God in ALL that I do and that includes, “work”.

Questions and Reflections (for you to think about on your own or to discuss in your small group

1. What is my attitude on a Monday morning….OK after your coffee?

2.  How do i relate to a boss who is not a nice person or asked me to do jobs that i hate doing?

3.  What’s the deal when what my boss requires is in total conflict with what God requires of me?

4.  How kind do i have to be a as a boss when someone is totally incompetent and needs to be shown the door?

OK …back to work or ………..?
