"THE BIBLE FOR GROWN-UPS"

Part 2: Something Old, Something New

On Sunday 20th October we continued our series “The Bible for Grown-Ups . You can listen to the talk by clicking here.

Once you have listened, here are some questions to consider:
1. What do you think Jesus meant when he said he came not to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfil them?

2. What are some of the questions people ask about the truth and validity of the New Testament? How do you view these in light of the mutually validating evidence contained within the accounts of Jesus’s life and the letters written about him?

3. How does recognising the bible as a collection of historical documents (as opposed to simply “a book”) change your understanding of its validity?

4. What are some of the questions that people ask about the Old Testament?

5. What are some of the questions YOU ask about the Old Testament?

6. How might you go about including some time to read about Jesus (in the New Testament) and about God in the Old Testament?

7. What might the bible be telling you today?

Additional resources:

For a simple explanation of why we can trust the writings collected in the New Testament, listen to this short (7 minute) explanation by Canadian theologian Dr D. A Carson. Dr Carson holds degrees in maths and chemistry plus a Ph.D in the New Testament from Cambridge University (so, quite clever then!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF0BHErlsEQ

For a longer discourse on the bible and Jesus’s teaching on it, here is a longer (43 minute) talk by the late Dr R. C. Sproul, whom I reference in my talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n_cWZZzzec
