Father and Child

It is a bank holiday today to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day – we are grateful to God and all those that fought for the freedom we enjoy today. My son asked me earlier in the week if I could cut his hair and I promised to do it this bank holiday, since I’m not working and yes I did it! This is a new skill I’m gradually perfecting during this lockdown - becoming my son’s barber and I’m pleased at the progress I’m making.  How about you, have you acquired any new skills as a result of this lockdown?

So, do you know why I’m excited?  This is the third time I’ve cut my son’s hair. The first and second times were a bit of a struggle because my son didn’t trust me to do a good job and even now, I’m still not perfect. The first time he grudgingly accepted (unbelief, obedience) whilst the second time he had no choice due to the ongoing lockdown (necessity) but the third time, he requested himself due to the ongoing lockdown (way of life).

This got me thinking that my experience is relevant to Christians and people who are exploring Christianity and even more relevant during this pandemic period.

The Bible says in Proverbs 3: 5-6 (NIV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight

We are in unprecedented and uncertain times which could make trusting God in all things difficult. You might actually be in a phase of reluctant obedience (I have to do what the Bible says even though I don’t feel like it) or necessity (no one to turn to for help and support at this time) or unbelief (where is God in all this?, exploring what it means to follow Jesus) or way of life (I surrender all to God).

The good news is, whatever you feel or your circumstance - God’s love is constant, He understands you and is open to a relationship with you at your own pace. God’s desire is for the Christian journey to be an enjoyable way of life for us but He accepts us the way we are today, the same way I love my son whether he trusts my hair-cutting skills or not.

So cheer up because God loves you for who you are!

P.S – I love worship songs and recently came across 3 great songs (I think) which I’ll like to share with you. Any other suggestions are welcome:

Famous For (I Believe)
There’s Nothing That Our God Can’t Do
Raise A Hallelujah

God bless you
