What Do You Really, Really Want?

In 2005, I went with a friend to the NEC in Birmingham, to see the Motor Show. I saw lots of fantastic cars that day but especially remember one in particular. I had gone onto the stand being run by TVR, a British sportscar company, specifically to see a model they called the Tamora. However… as I approached the stand, my jaw dropped wide open as I saw another car they had just launched. It was a full convertible version, the mark II version, of their Tuscan model and it made me forget all about the Tamora.

There it was, top down, a vision in burnt orange, and I kid you not, if I had had £40,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I’d have ordered one there and then! Here’s the photo I took of the very one:

Well, although I got to sit in it and dream, I still don’t own a TVR (hey, maybe next year!) but my goodness, a lot of things have happened in my life since 2005!

I’ve been to some amazing places, met some wonderful people and my wife Claire and I have had a second son (the ‘Samson’ model, launched in 2003, was joined by the ‘Harry’ in 2007!).

Perhaps most surprising of all, given that in 2005 I was perfectly happily running a health club, I have found myself in recent years studying at Oxford University on the way to becoming a Baptist Minister. If you had asked back at the NEC me which was more likely… I’d have told you that obviously I’d be buying the TVR – and you must be kidding about the rest!

Life takes some surprising twists and turns does it not? (TVR’s too, if you’re not careful!). I wonder what God has in store for me – and for you – next? Tell me what you want, what you really, really want! But don’t tell me without a smile, because God may have other ideas…

As we reflect on 2022 and look ahead to Christmas and the New Year ahead, let me encourage you to spend some time thinking and talking with friends and maybe writing down some things that you really, really want in life. Take them to the Lord in prayer. And may God richly bless you as His plans unfold in your life!
